Course Description
This one-hour continuing education course, hosted by the California Farm Bureau, provides a detailed review of California Department of Pesticide Regulation’s (DPR) top pesticide violations and how to avoid them. Designed for growers, operators, and those overseeing pesticide use in agricultural operations, the course offers both regulatory background and practical, cost-effective compliance strategies. Participants will explore essential laws and regulations, training requirements, documentation standards, personal protective equipment protocols, and hazard communication responsibilities. Emphasis is placed on real-world implementation of legal obligations to protect worker safety and maintain compliance.
Course Objectives:
After completing this course, learners will be able to:
- Identify and interpret the regulatory structure governing pesticide use in California, including the roles of U.S. EPA, DPR, local Ag Commissioners, and key legal codes such as FAC and 3CCR.
- Recognize the most common pesticide violations in California agriculture and explain their implications for growers, operators, and employers.
- Implement compliant field worker and handler training programs, including who qualifies to train, what content must be covered, and when and how training should occur.
- Establish and maintain required documentation and postings, including pesticide use records, hazard communication postings (A-8 and A-9), and decontamination kit availability.
- Understand and fulfill employer responsibilities for providing PPE and medical evaluation, including proper selection, use, training, recordkeeping, and emergency response procedures for pesticide exposure.
